Speech, Language & Hearing Sciences
Major Certificate
Our Bachelor of Science in speech, language and hearing sciences is a pre-professional degree that prepares you to pursue graduate education in speech-language pathology or audiology and to attain a Certificate of Clinical Competence in your area of specialty.
Speech-language pathologists assess and treat patients who have speech, language, voice, fluency or oral motor disorders. They also assist people who wish to improve their communication skills through changes in vocal pitch, quality or accent.
Audiologists identify, diagnose and treat people experiencing disorders associated with the ear and hearing. They utilize equipment such as audiometers and computers to assess a patient’s impairment and plan a course of treatment. Audiologists are concerned with the nature and extent of hearing loss and how this may impact a client’s quality of life.
For students who have already completed a non-related four-year undergraduate degree but who need to complete prerequisite coursework for graduate school, we offer an undergraduate certificate in speech, language and hearing sciences. The certificate requires 25 credit hours, which are taken online.
We also offer a Master of Speech Language Pathology and a Doctor of Audiology (AuD). For more information about our graduate degrees, contact Dr. Allison Plumb, 1219 Haley Center, 334-844-9608.
