***ALL 3000- and 4000-level PHIL classes now carry prerequisites. All 3000-level classes require prior completion of 3 hours at the 1000-level. All 4000-level classes require prior completion of 6 hours at the 3000-level.***

Requirements for the Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy

The philosophy major requires 33 hours (excluding PHIL 4920) with no more than 3 hours at the 1000 level, no more than 3 hours at the 2000 level, and at least 6 hours at the 4000 level (excluding PHIL 4920).

Part I: Logic (3 hrs)

  • PHIL 3110: Symbolic Logic

Part II: History of Philosophy (6 hrs)

  • PHIL 3330: Ancient Philosophy
  • PHIL 3400: Medieval Philosophy
  • PHIL 3340: History of Early Modern Philosophy
  • PHIL 3350: History of Late Modern and Pre-analytic Philosophy
  • PHIL 3360: History of Early Analytic Philosophy
  • PHIL 3740: Existentialism

Part III: Topics in Philosophy (12 hrs)

  • PHIL 2970 and every 3000 level course not in Part I or Part II

Philosophy Senior Seminar (6 hrs)

  • PHIL 4970 (may be repeated)

Electives (6 hrs)

  • Any 2000-4000 level classes

Required courses include:

  • PHIL 3110: Symbolic Logic
  • PHIL 3340: Early Modern Philosophy (plus one other history of philosophy course)
  • PHIL 3640: Philosophy of Law
  • PHIL 3600: Political Philosophy (plus other necessary or elective courses)
  • PHIL 4970: Any two courses (plus electives)

Suggested Non-Philosophy Courses:

  • HIST 3600: Private Lives and Public Places
  • ENGL 4189: Rhetorical Theory and Practice
  • Political Science offers various courses on law, legislation, etc.

 

If you are interested in religion, consider pursuing a concentration in philosophy of religion. For more information, contact Dr. Kelly Jolley.
