Have you ever wondered what makes humans unique as a species? Or how humans adapt to different environments biologically and culturally? Anthropologists ask questions like these and explore how people and cultures around world and throughout time have changed. Simply put, anthropology is the study of our diversity and our shared humanity as a species.
Auburn's anthropology program features four sub-fields: sociocultural anthropology (how people in different places live and understand the world around them), archaeology (material evidence of how societies change over time), biological anthropology (human variation, evolution, and adaptation to the environment), and linguistics (relationship between language and culture). With a BA in anthropology, you'll be able to apply your knowledge to global issues outside of the classroom in areas such as social and environmental policy, medical anthropology, forensic anthropology, museum studies, cultural resource management, and historic preservation. Each of the four subfields of anthropology can be applied to solve real world problems.

Why are prices going up? Why are some products harder to get? These everyday questions, and others like them, are what economists try to answer. Economics is the study of how individuals, businesses, governments, and societies make decisions concerning the use and distribution of resources. It is the central science underlying business and public policies.
Our BS in economics emphasizes a broad understanding of how consumers' and producers' behavior is influenced by certain events—such as changes in interest rates or new government regulations. We offer two tracks of study. The primary track allows you to choose a minor to complement your study of economics and advance your career goals. Political science, finance, business administration, and foreign languages are common choices. The quantitative track is a specialized program designed to prepare you for graduate education in economics.
We also offer a Master of Science in economics and a PhD in applied economics. For more information about our graduate degrees, contact the director of graduate studies.

Linguistics is the study of human language whether spoken, written, signed, or communicated through touch. You’ll learn how language is produced, structured, learned, forgotten, and how it varies.
Our linguistics minor develops analytical reasoning, critical thinking, argumentation, and clarity of expression by gathering language data, observing data patterns, drawing conclusions from those patterns, and communicating the results. An awareness of how language works is especially valuable in client or patient-centered professions such as education, medicine, nutrition, law, politics, and social work.

Speech-language pathologists assess and treat patients who have speech, language, voice, fluency, or oral motor disorders. They also assist people who wish to improve their communication skills through changes in vocal pitch, quality, or accent.
Audiologists identify, diagnosis, and treat people experiencing disorders associated with the ear and hearing. Audiologists utilize equipment such as audiometers and computers to assess a patient’s impairment and plan a course of treatment. Audiologists are concerned with the nature and extent of hearing loss and how this may impact a client’s quality of life.
We also offer a Master of Speech Language Pathology and a Doctor of Audiology (AuD). For more information about our graduate degrees, contact Dr. Allison Plumb, 1219 Haley Center, 334-844-9608.

Women's and Gender Studies
Minor
Women's and gender studies offers the opportunity to explore and understand the diverse experiences of individuals in culture and society by analyzing how gender intersects with race, class, sexuality, and other identities within systems of power. You also will learn feminist approaches to knowledge, such as the place of personal experience and activism in the formulation of theory. Courses provide the framework and tools to develop a critical feminist perspective on the world and on your own life, as well as the opportunity to apply this lens through analytical reasoning, creative and expository writing, oral communication, research, and service.
The undergraduate minor in women’s and gender studies prepares you for graduate or professional school as well as domestic and international careers in business, community development, education, government, health and human services, journalism, law, media, non-profit organizations, public administration, etc.
The graduate minor prepares you for advanced teaching and research on gender and sexualities.
