Applying to Graduate School is not a decision to make lightly. A career in history can be intellectually rewarding and graduates of our program have accepted job offers from an impressive range of academic institutions, archives and public history organizations. Still, completing the degree requires a lengthy investment of time and significant effort.

Before submitting materials, applicants should take note of information about Department of History's Financial Planning and Support. Applications for assistantships must be received (and complete) by January 15. If the applicant does not wish to be considered for an assistantship, materials will be accepted up to March 15.

The Department of History offers two graduate programs: the Master of Arts in History and the PhD in History. Additionally, the department offers a Graduate Certificate in Public History. The graduate programs prepare students for careers in teaching, public history, government, and research.

How to Apply

Applicants seeking admission to graduate study in the Auburn University History Department should submit all application materials (including letters of recommendation) via the Auburn University Graduate School’s “Apply Yourself” interface at: The History Department requires that every application be supported by at least three academic recommendations, a formal statement of purpose and a writing sample. Applicants will provide academic transcripts. All applicants must take the GRE General Test (the Department does not require that candidates take the GRE subject test).
