University Scholarships and Awards
Information regarding the scholarship application process and deadlines is available on the university scholarship page. All students must apply through the Auburn University Scholarship Opportunity Manager (AUSOM).
Departmental Scholarships
The Department of World Languages, Literatures and Cultures offers the following scholarship opportunities:
Castanoli Abroad Award
Ten awards in the amount of $1,000 given annually to help foreign language students defray the cost of their participation in Auburn University study abroad programs or in external study abroad programs with a foreign language component. If possible, at least one awardee per language.
Eligibility Requirements:
- Be a foreign language major (foreign language minors qualify only for those areas without a major: Asian Studies [Chinese, Japanese and Korean], Classics, Global Cultures and Italian)
- Must have sophomore, junior or senior standing
- Minimum of 3.5 GPA
Application Deadlines:
- Spring semester study abroad: Complete AUSOM, and if the department requests follow-up materials, these must be in by November 15 (AUSOM by 4:45 pm CST).
- Summer and fall study abroad: Complete the AUSOM application by 4:45 pm CST on February 1 and, if the department requests follow-up materials, these must be in by February 15.
Castanoli Young Scholars in Foreign Language
Two awards in the amount of $2,000 given annually to reward high-achieving freshmen who are enrolled in Department of World Languages, Literatures and Cultures courses.
Eligibility Requirements:
- All foreign language majors and minors qualify; preference will be given to majors if there is a major in that language.
- Must have a freshman standing
- Minimum of 3.5 GPA
Application Deadline:
AUSOM application by 4:45 pm CST on December 1, and if the department requests follow-up materials, these must be in by February 15.
Wiatt Achievement Award
Fifteen awards in the amount of $1,000 given annually to high-achieving students in any foreign language. If possible, at least one awardee per language.
Eligibility Requirements:
- Foreign language majors (foreign language minors qualify only for those areas without a major: Asian Studies [Chinese, Japanese, and Korean], Classics, Global Cultures and Italian)
- Must be a sophomore, junior or senior who will be enrolled throughout the following academic year
- Minimum of 3.5 GPA
Application Deadline:
AUSOM application by 4:45 pm CST on February 1, and if the department requests follow-up materials, these must be in by February 15.
Thomas Nadar Memorial Endowed Scholarship
One award in the amount of $2,000 (or two awards of $1,000) given to high-achieving student(s) pursuing a German (FLGR) or German-International Trade (FLGT) major.
Eligibility Requirements:
- Must be a FLGR or FLGT major
- Must have taken at least two semesters of German at Auburn University
- Minimum GPA of 3.0
Two separate applications are required.

AUSOM application by 4:45 pm CST on February 1, and if the department requests follow-up materials, these must be in by February 15.
José A. (Pepe) Escarpanter Memorial Endowed Scholarship
One award in the amount of $1,000 per year for four years given annually to reward high-achieving incoming freshmen who will pursue a Spanish (FLSP) or Spanish-International Trade (FLST) degree.
Eligibility Requirements:
- Must be a FLSP or FLST major
- Minimum GPA of 3.0
- Must demonstrate financial need as verified by Office of Financial Services
Students must apply through AUSOM by February 1.
AU College of Liberal Arts Academic Enrichment Scholarship
A competitive scholarship providing up to $3,000 to CLA students who are enrolled in a study abroad program related to their educational and career goals. For full details, go to https://cla.auburn.edu/cla-abroad/scholarships/.
