Application Requirements

We offer fall semester entrance only. If you want to pursue our MA in Spanish or MHS, you must have:

  • A bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution, with at least 38 semester hours of undergraduate Spanish above the freshman level (international students holding undergraduate degrees in an area other than language studies may submit their transcript for equivalency corroboration). 
  • Satisfactory scores on the Graduate Record Examination are required for all domestic applicants. International students must have acceptable scores on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). 

Applicants lacking course requirements need to make up deficiencies before admission to the graduate program.

Application Deadline: February 15 (fall entrance only)

Please note: Visa processing for international applicants requires several months.

 

 

Curriculum Requirements

Master of Arts in Spanish (MA)

  • At least 30 semester hours including 4 thesis credit hours
  • Successful completion of comprehensive examinations
  • A reading knowledge of one other foreign language (demonstrated by examination or by completion of a foreign language first-year sequence (or the equivalent) with a grade of B or better)
     

Master of Hispanic Studies (MHS)

  • At least 36 semester hours with no thesis
  • Successful completion of comprehensive examinations
  • A reading knowledge of one other foreign language (demonstrated by examination or by completion of a foreign language first-year sequence (or the equivalent) with a grade of B or better)

Candidates for the MHS must earn a minimum of 30 semester hours in their major. A concentration consisting of 6 semester hours of graduate-level courses in a related field or fields may be earned as part of the MHS degree.
