We offer the Master of Arts (MA) in Spanish and the Master of Hispanic Studies (MHS). Our Spanish graduate program will prepare you for careers in teaching, business, government, world affairs, diplomacy, social service and law enforcement, and for doctoral studies in Spanish in the areas of literature, linguistics or foreign language education.
Our research-oriented MA degree requires at least 30 credit hours in Spanish at the 6000 and 7000 levels (including thesis credits) and a master's thesis. It’s intended for students with a bachelor's degree in Spanish who desire to pursue a traditional approach to the language and its literature. Our MA program emphasizes the comprehensive study of linguistics, literature, or cultural studies with major consideration given to history, analysis, criticism and theory. Our MA degree also serves as excellent preparation for doctoral study at other institutions.
The MHS degree consists of at least 36 credit hours. In addition to offering an introduction to the linguistic, literary and cultural heritage of Spain and Spanish America, our MHS places added emphasis on perfecting audio-lingual skills as well as practice in reading, expository writing and oral presentation. It prepares you for a variety of careers, for example, high school teaching and employment in the business world—which is experiencing an ever-increasing demand for well-prepared, bilingual personnel—and for further graduate study. You may choose an optional concentration consisting of no more than six additional credit hours in a graduate field(s) related to your major program (for example, English as a Second Language, history, political science, business or women's studies).
