The PhD program in Speech, Language and Hearing Sciences is individualized to meet the student’s needs and interests based on his/her career goals. Selection of specific courses is determined through advising from the student’s mentor and committee. Knowledge beyond the master’s level shall be demonstrated in the following coursework:
- Research Methods/Design/Statistics (15 credits)
- Major Content Area* (26-38 credit hours depending on background)
- Master’s Degree in AuD, SLHS, or related area – 26 hours
- Master’s Degree in unrelated area – 32 credits
- B.A. or B.S. in SLHS or related area – 32-38 credits
- Minor Content Area (12 credits)
- Research and Dissertation (10 credits)
*All students must enroll in SLHS 8000 Professional Development for Research Careers in Health Sciences (1 credit 1st Fall, 2 credits 1st and 2nd Spring – total of 5 credits) and SLHS 8850 Grant Preparation in Health Sciences
In addition to our MS SLHS and AuD coursework, classes offered to doctoral students include:
SLHS 7930 DIRECTED STUDIES (1-3) IND. Conferences, readings, research or reports in a specialized area of communication disorders. Course may be repeated for a maximum of 3 credit hours.
SLHS 7970 SPECIAL TOPICS SEMINAR (2) SEM. Advanced treatment of contemporary topics and trends, as well as current research aspects of audiology and speech-language pathology. Course may be repeated for a maximum of 4 credit hours.
SLHS 8000 PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT FOR RESEARCH CAREERS IN HEALTH SCIENCES (1-2) LEC. 1-2. SU. In-depth survey of professional aspects relevant to research careers in health sciences fields (e.g., ethical research practices, professional communication of scholarly work, employment readiness). Course may be repeated for a maximum of 5 credit hours.
SLHS 8850 GRANT PROPOSAL PREPARATION IN HEALTH SCIENCES (3) LEC. 3. Overview of the grant proposal preparation process, from identifying an appropriate funding mechanism to developing the materials for a grant proposal (e.g., specific aims, research plan, budget).
