Auburn University's School of Communication and Journalism, in partnership with the Alabama Scholastic Press Association, held a journalism and media workshop for area high school students on Thursday, Nov. 7.

Students from Auburn High School, Opelika High School and Smiths Station High School spent the day on Auburn's campus, learning about the latest technologies, skills and ideas in the world of media.

Faculty from the journalism program offered nine different workshops, each focused on a different topic, including sports announcing, podcasting, mobile photojournalism and using AI in reporting.

"This was a great opportunity for these students to get hands-on experience in traditional and emerging platforms," said Justin Blankenship, associate director of journalism at Auburn. "And it gave our faculty the chance to learn what the next generation is looking for from news and journalism."

The visiting students also toured Auburn's student media facilities and met Auburn University's mascot, Aubie.

The Alabama Scholastic Press Association, based out of the University of Alabama College of Communication and Information Science, sponsors regional workshops across the state. This was the first workshop they have sponsored in the east Alabama region. Based on the success of this workshop, they plan to offer more in the future.

Additionally, the School of Communication and Journalism will be offering a week-long video production summer camp in June 2025 for rising 10th-12th graders. Registration is set to begin in mid-December.
