Experience the magic of ‘Pippin,’ Auburn University Theatre and Dance’s first musical of the season

Auburn University Theatre and Dance continues its 2022-23 season “& Dance” with “Pippin,” a musical by Stephen Schwartz, Nov. 10 at 7:30 p.m. on the Telfair Peet Theatre Mainstage. The show is directed by Ashley Butler.

In “Pippin,” a troubled young man sets out on a journey of self-discovery to find meaning, and maybe even a little magic, as a troupe of mysterious players guides the way. Stephen Schwartz's masterpiece harnesses the full potential power of musical theatre and stagecraft, telling Pippin's story through a wondrous combination of songs, dance, comedy and pathos.

Ever since Stephen Swartz first conceived of “Pippin” while a student at Carnegie Mellon, the show has entertained audiences with its unique sense of style and storytelling.  The original show, premiering on Broadway in 1972, was nominated for 11 Tony Awards (winning four) while the 2013 Broadway revival won an additional four Tonys, including Best Revival of a Musical.

A truly collaborative piece, “Pippin” weaves together all the components of musical theatre—song, dance and acting—and throws in a little magic, some humor, and a lot of heart to tell a compelling story about a young person finding their place and seeking meaning in the world.

The artistic team for “Pippin” includes director Ashley Butler, music director James Mablin, choreographer Jeri Dickey, fight choreographer Dan LaRocque, vocal director Dr. Elizabeth Benson and an incredible gathering of designers, including guest scenic and lighting designer Travis McHale, guest associate lighting designer Devin Cameron, student costume designers Shelby Dupree and Mary Grace Sullivan, student assistant lighting designer Katie Wolfe, and student sound designer/engineer Annabell Mallard with guest sound design supervisor Anthony Narciso.

The student management team includes stage manager Madison Todd and assistant stage managers Abigail Bowling and Daisha Flint. The cast includes Nikki Ahlf, Patrick Barnett, Olivia Beland, Hannah Castarphen, Johnathan Davis, Jonathon Dickey, Morgan Hogans, Kathryn Mims, Bethany Novotny, Sydney Pereira, Garrett Scott, Lily Sfida, Evie Slaugenhoup, Kara Anne Smith, Ella Taylor, Tony To, Anna Turpen, Cassie Vitale and Michaela Williams.

The run time for “Pippin” is approximately two hours with an intermission.
