SELF PORTRAIT WITH CAT:

Novak’s creative research interests focus on portraits. She makes use of layering as an important part of the painting and drawing process. For this particular self-portrait, she uses mixed media and layering to add components to the portrait that represent the subject’s personality, emotions, and interests. This portrait’s composition is informed by Kehinde Wiley’s 2018 portrait of President Obama through the use of a centralized figure, foliage and flowers that surround the figure.
