Department of Aviation renamed Auburn University School of Aviation
Auburn Aviation is now designated as a school, following decisions by the Auburn University Board of Trustees and Alabama Commission on Higher Education.
The School of Aviation in the College of Liberal Arts offers a Bachelor of Science in Aviation Management and Bachelor of Science in Professional Flight. The Aviation Management curriculum focuses on business and leadership practices to generate success in the aviation industry. The Professional Flight major equips graduates with piloting skills and aeronautical knowledge, preparing students to become commercial pilots, flight instructors, and more.
Minors in both Aviation Management and Professional Flight are available to all students, regardless of major focus of study.
“The new name describes the breadth and scope of the scholarly activities, diverse course offerings, and disciplines and programs represented within our department,” said School of Aviation Director Jim Witte. “Furthermore, ‘School of Aviation’ accurately reflects the emphasis on aviation education and training, which serves as the cornerstone at all levels of our curriculum. School of Aviation represents an inclusive descriptor signifying the diversity of our activities in both research and practice.”
Auburn University began teaching aviation administration in the 1920s, and its flight programs are among the longest operating in the U.S. The name change from “department” to “school” follows a national trend in aviation education institutions.
Each program and initiative in the School of Aviation is built on a foundation of global awareness, technological expertise, and a commitment to advancing the field of aviation. With the name change, the School of Aviation hopes to better represent to students, faculty, and business affiliates the breadth of educational and practical opportunities Auburn presents.
On Feb. 4, the Auburn University Board of Trustees approved the Department of Aviation’s request to change its name to the School of Aviation. The Alabama Commission on Higher Education approved the change on its March 11 meeting.
