Professor Emeritus Tony Madrigal passes away
The Department of World Languages, Literatures and Cultures mourns the recent passing of a beloved faculty member. Professor Emeritus Tony Madrigal passed away on Dec. 28 at the age of 77.
Dr. Madrigal received his undergraduate degree in Spanish from Michigan State University. He went on to complete an MA in Spanish from Michigan State and receive his doctorate from the University of Kentucky in 1973.
In 1970, Dr. Madrigal was hired as an instructor at Auburn University, launching a distinguished academic career. As a professor of Spanish literature, he taught at Auburn until 2008, when he was awarded emeritus status. A prolific writer, he authored numerous books and articles focusing on Spanish Golden Age literature. He served as chair of the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures from 1995–2001. He was well-loved by his students, who called him 'Mad Dog', for his humor, verve and compassion.
He is survived by his brother; three children; seven grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.
