Communication professor receives top teaching award from SSCA

Brigitta Brunner accepting the Sisco Award for Excellence in Teaching

Professor Brigitta Brunner has been awarded the 2026 John I. Sisco Excellence in Teaching Award by the Southern States Communication Association (SSCA).

The SSCA’s John I. Sisco Award recognizes faculty who have consistently demonstrated excellence in teaching communication throughout their academic careers. Brunner accepted the 2026 award at the SSCA Awards Luncheon in April.

“It is an honor to have been selected by my peers at institutions from across the region for this award,” Brunner said. “Winning this award is a nice way to celebrate what happens in my classroom and how I prepare students with theories and concepts and then give them room to apply that knowledge to real-world practice.”

The awards committee specifically highlighted Brunner’s encouragement of critical thinking, adaptability, emphasis on responsibility and mentoring.
