APA Journalism Foundation Internship Program
Application Deadline: Friday, April 4, 2025
Student eligibility: open to junior or senior undergraduate students or to students enrolled in a graduate program.
- Up to eight internships will be awarded each year
- Newspapers will pay the matching portion of payroll taxes and will reimburse the intern for any business travel or other business expenses. For hours worked, interns must be paid at least minimum wage.
- Host newspapers are expected to let the intern write stories, cover meetings and take photos, just as any newsroom staff member would. Also, the host newspaper must share at least one story (but more are encouraged) of statewide interest on the APA content sharing site.
- Newspaper will apply along with the interns for approval.
- One of the eight interns will be dedicated to developing content on topics of statewide interest for the APA content sharing site. This multi-media intern position will be supervised by the APA staff with assistance from journalism schools and/or retired journalism professionals.
- Students will be required to submit a summary of their work experience to be distributed to the board and possibly published in AlaPressa.

$2,500 W.H. Metz Newspaper Management Scholarship
Application Deadline: Friday, April 4, 2025
- The scholarship is open to rising seniors enrolled in a university or college in Alabama. Students who have declared a major in journalism or advertising will show a commitment to newspaper work, and students who major in other subjects and who have worked at newspapers or on high school or college newspaper staffs also will be considered.
- The scholarship is offered without regard to race, sex, religion or national origin. Minority students are encouraged to apply.
- Preference will be given to applicants who say they plan to work in management of newspapers in Alabama.
- Applications will be reviewed by the APA Journalism Foundation Board of Directors, and a winner, if selected, will be notified in May. A check for the scholarship will be sent directly to the student in September 2020, after the scholarship recipient sends verification of enrollment in the fall semester or winter quarter to the APA office. The Foundation board may choose not to award a scholarship.
