Madison Kovksy (COMM)
My position is with the MLB Summer Internship Program at the Office of The Commissioner of Baseball in New York City. I am a social production intern, where I work on production for MLB’s social media platforms. This year’s internship program consists of not only hands on experience in the world of baseball, but also “Baseball Bites” throughout the summer where we get to hear from different departments throughout the company. Some of my day-to-day responsibilities include: ideating and creating social content, helping to edit social videos, logging and analyzing social posts, helping produce live shoots with athletes, and monitoring daily and weekly social trends.
I was able to develop this internship by applying online. In addition, I truly believe my experience with Auburn Baseball as a creative content intern allowed me to have the experience that MLB was looking for in a social production intern. My best advice for others looking to apply would be to be yourself throughout the interview process. Not only is it important for you to have the skillset necessary for the job, but also to get along with the people around you. I went through two rounds of interviews, and my now supervisor was the first person I talked to. A second piece of advice I would give students looking for a great summer internship experience would be to start in our own backyard at Auburn. I know how often we are told about the opportunities available to us at school, but it really is true. Even if a position on campus is unpaid, the experience is everything! I credit Auburn Baseball for teaching me everything in the sports media world that I needed in order to get to New York.
The most important thing I have learned in the office is to not only to get your work done, but also be good to the people around you! Putting yourself out there and making friends with your co-workers and fellow interns is the best thing you can do for yourself. Don’t be afraid to make mistakes and ask questions. Don’t be too hard on yourself, you are more than likely not giving yourself enough credit for the job you are doing.
Take advantage of every opportunity! You will probably get to hear from so many incredible people who you would not normally get to hear from as a full-time employee. Most of the people at MLB don’t get to hear from the commissioner himself on their first day of work, but the interns were fortunate enough to get even just a few minutes of his time. Most of the people around you were interns at some point, and they are happy to share their experience.
Don’t sell yourself short. Apply for your dream position!! I applied for at least five different programs, and it worked out that MLB was the one I was selected for. Have so much fun while you're at it!!
