Auburn University Theatre and Dance continues its 2022-23 season with a staged reading of Larissa FastHorse’s “The Thanksgiving Play” on Oct. 27 and 28 at 7:30 p.m., and Oct. 30 at 2:30 p.m. in the Telfair Peet Theatre Blackbox.

When a group of well-meaning educators gathers to devise and stage a new pageant to mark both Turkey Day and Native American Heritage Month, the results are nowhere near elementary. In Larissa FastHorse’s hilarious satire, good intentions devolve into absurd assumptions as tensions rise to hilarious heights.

Auburn audiences have the unique opportunity to engage with this play in advance of its first Broadway run in the spring of 2023. Larissa FastHorse will be the first female identified, indigenous playwright to receive a production on Broadway. Auburn students and the campus and local community will have the opportunity to experience this text in performance before it reaches a much broader, national audience.

The staged reading format offers the audience a different kind of engagement with the performers and performance text. Rehearsed over a compact two-week period, this production places an emphasis on the playwright’s words and provides audiences an opportunity to encounter the play in a different way. Post-show discussions following each reading will allow audiences to converse with the cast and director and share in dialogue around the play’s themes and ideas.

“The Thanksgiving Play” is directed by Chase Bringardner. The cast includes Tapley Cronier, Nick DiJulio, Hali Everette, Cecilia Frederick and Avonlea Yeakley.

The run time for this show approximately 90 minutes with no intermission. Each performance will be followed by a short post-show discussion with the cast.

This reading is free and open to the public, but attendees must reserve a ticket here or call the box office at 334-844-4154.
