Professor emeritus Cal Clark passes away

Cal Clark, Professor Emeritus in the Department of Political Science, passed away on Sept. 13, in Seattle, WA.

Dr. Clark educated generations of students over his career which spanned more than four decades. He began his tenure at Auburn in 1992 and was the MPA program director from 2002 to 2012. Dr. Clark served as the Alumni Professor of Political Science from 1998 to 2003 and as the Department Head of Political Science from 1992 to 1995. Prior to joining the faculty at Auburn, he taught and directed programs at the University of Wyoming and commenced his career as a professor in the Department of Government at New Mexico State University.

Dr. Clark earned his bachelor's degree at Beloit College in 1966 and his PhD in political science from the University of Illinois in 1973.

In his career, he received a number of prestigious awards and accolades. He received the Minority Achievement Award from Auburn University in 2007 and a Distinguished Service Award from the American Association for Chinese Studies in 2015. He received an Appreciate Award from the East Alabama Chapter of the National Forum for Black Public Administrators, an Outstanding Graduate Faculty Award from the Student Government Association, and a Pi Sigma Alpha Award from the American Political Science Association among many other achievements.

Dr. Clark was also a prolific author and editor throughout his career and was honored for his novel “The Black Angels” during the Alabama Book Festival in 2017. He co-authored “Challenging NeoLiberalism: The Economic Miracles in Chile and Taiwan,” as well as “Taiwain’s Political Economy: Meeting Challenges, Pursuing Progress,” and “Women in Taiwan’s Politics: Overcoming Barriers to Women’s Participation in a Modernizing Society.”

Dr. Clark was a member of a number of various organizations during his career, including the American Association for Chinese Studies, the Southern Political Science Association, the Western Political Science Association, the Alabama Political Science Association and the International Political Science Association.
