Join author Kiese Laymon at Auburn University as he hosts an open Q&A, presents a reading of his own award-winning work and speaks with Associate Professor of English Ernest Gibson III.

Mississippi native Kiese Laymon has penned several pieces about the depth of America’s relationship with race, masculinity and the Deep South. Laymon’s memoir, “Heavy: An American Memoir,” was named one of the “50 Best Memoirs of the Past 50 Years” by The New York Times and received numerous additional awards for literary achievement. His essay collection, “How to Slowly Kill Yourself and Others in America,” received critical acclaim from The New York Times Book Review.

Along with his writing, Laymon also founded the Catherine Coleman Literary Arts and Justice Initiative at Jackson State University, a program with a mission to help young community writers find their voices.

Laymon is currently the Libbie Shearn Moody Professor of English and Creative Writing at Rice University in Houston, Texas.

Laymon will be visiting Auburn University’s Telfair Peet Theatre on Thursday, March 26, where he will host a reading and join Ernest L. Gibson III in conversation. Reception will begin at 6 p.m., where Laymon’s work will also be available for purchase from Auburn Oil Co. The event will follow from 6:30-7:30 p.m. and conclude with a book signing.

Laymon will also be hosting an open Q&A at Auburn’s Haley Center; the Q&A will take place on Thursday, March 26, and begin at 4 p.m. in room 2346.

All events are free and open to the public.
