Former Plainsman editors rally together to fund endowment for award-winning student paper

The Auburn Plainsman

By establishing The Plainsman Editors Endowed Fund for Excellence, former editors of The Auburn University Plainsman are working together to ensure the future of the award-winning student newspaper.

The endowment is intended to support the continued operating costs of the student news publication. In its long history, The Plainsman has seen many changes and experienced many trials and stresses associated with college journalism, but through the outstanding leadership of its editors, The Plainsman has continued to thrive and lead the way in collegiate journalism.

“Serving as Plainsman editor was one of the greatest years of my life. I know a lot of other editors feel the same way. We’re excited to make it possible for future student journalists to enjoy the same awesome experience of working for such a top-notch student news operation,” said John Carvalho, professor emeritus of journalism and former Plainsman adviser.

This fund will help current and future editors and staff members continue the mission of the Plainsman and navigate any unexpected obstacles by providing an annual supplement to the operating budget. The Plainsman moved to an on-line publication in February 2021 to align with current industry trends. While this reduced expenses, the Plainsman still has annual expenses of around $40,000 with 50% being associated with production and other administrative costs. The current staff is working hard to continue ad sales to support these expenses, but this supplement will ensure that the Plainsman maintains a strong financial position into the future.

An anonymous donor has pledged to match any gift made to the endowment in 2021 up to $25,000. Both cash giving and pledges to the endowment will count towards this total.

The Auburn University Foundation is a 501c3 meaning all gifts are tax deductible. Gifts can be given in the form of cash, stock, through a donor advised fund, or through a planned gift. Cash gifts can be given on-line at https://alumniq.auburn.edu/giving/to/plainsman

Check can be made payable to the Auburn University Foundation and sent to 255 Heisman Drive, Suite 3248, Auburn, AL 36849. For all other giving methods, please contact Peyton Alsobrook for more details peytonalsobrook@auburn.edu
