Auburn graduate student wins top research-in-progress award from Broadcast Education Association

Phillip Coxwell receiving top research in progress award

The Broadcast Education Association (BEA) honored Phillip Coxwell, a communication graduate student and Auburn University multimedia specialist, for research excellence in October.

Coxwell presented his current project, "Captioning of Non-Speech Information in Pbskids.Org Children's Programming," at the 2024 BEA On-Location conference. The paper examines the quality and consistency of closed captioning for non-speech sounds in children's programming.

The BEA recognized Coxwell's work with the Top Research Session: Research-in-Progress Papers award.

"I was surprised and incredibly honored to receive the top research-in-progress award, however, I don't view it as a reflection of what I have done," Coxwell said. "Instead, this award reinforces the importance of accessibility research and that we need to continue the work to make sure everyone can experience life as equally as possible, regardless of disabilities."

Coxwell also presented on captioning research methods at the conference as part of a panel on accessibility research tools.
