Auburn University Public Relations Advisory Council hosts Public Relations Day

PR Day panelists address Auburn University students

Auburn University’s Public Relations Advisory Council hosted PR Day on Feb. 17 to bring valuable networking opportunities to Auburn public relations students.

PR Day featured a panel of professionals from various industries who answered questions and gave advice to student attendees.

Featured panelists included professionals from USAA, Gulf Shores and Orange Beach Tourism, Axios, the Birmingham-Jefferson Convention Complex, the East Alabama Medical Center and Jackson Spalding.

The panelists provided Auburn students with advice on how to handle challenges, work through crises and ways to prepare for their future careers.

“Know what you can and cannot control,” shared Taylor Clark, communications and operations executive for the USAA.

Eleanor Hawkins, communications strategist and writer at Axios, said she would tell her younger self to “take risks,” “get uncomfortable” and “put yourself out there.” Hawkins also highlighted how public relations experience benefits professionals across fields.

Sales and Marketing Executive for the Birmingham-Jefferson Convention Complex Nicole Klein encouraged current students to get involved and surround themselves with people who advocate for them and want to advance their careers.

John Atkinson, PR and marketing director at the East Alabama Medical Center, echoed Klein’s advice and shared his experience of switching industries from athletics to health care. His story encouraged students to find a job that best fits them.

Senior Lead of Communication Engagement at Jackson Spalding Kathryn Venzon shared her experience working for a major PR firm. Her typical day on the job includes media monitoring, responding and interacting with customers on Chick-Fil-A’s social media networks.

Following the panel, students networked with the featured panelists and attended a LinkedIn and resume workshop hosted by the panel. The professionals offered advice and feedback on students’ LinkedIn profiles and resumes.

Events like PR Day advance the education of Auburn PR students and shape their future careers. AUPR is grateful to the PR Advisory Council for their commitment to the future of Auburn PR students.
