Auburn professor selected as Ragusa Foundation Fellow for work on Sicilian women writers

The College of Liberal Arts is proud to announce that Giovanna Summerfield, Castanoli Endowed Professor of Italian and French and director of Mediterranean Studies at Auburn University, has been selected as a Fellow of the Ragusa Foundation for the Humanities for her project on an anthology of Sicilian women writers.
This distinguished recognition honors scholars whose work reflects transcultural and transnational approaches to Italian humanistic culture. Summerfield’s scholarship embodies these values through her extensive research in French and Italian literature, religious and philosophical movements of the eighteenth century, comparative literature, women’s studies, film studies and Mediterranean studies.
She holds a doctorate in Romance languages and literatures, with a minor in European and Mediterranean history, from the University of Florida. Summerfield currently serves as editor-in-chief of “Italica,” the official journal of the American Association of Teachers of Italian and as co-founder and co-editor of “I.S. Med: Interdisciplinary Studies on the Mediterranean,” a journal dedicated to modern and contemporary Mediterranean thought. In addition to her academic work, she is a published poet and novelist.
Her selection as a Ragusa Foundation Fellow highlights her longstanding contributions to Italian studies and affirms Auburn University’s growing reputation for excellence in global and interdisciplinary research.
