Auburn Music student Karsen Betzold sings on national stage

Karsen Betzold, a commercial voice major from Charlotte, North Carolina, chose Auburn University for its incredible music program that blends performance with industry knowledge. She was drawn to Auburn's strong sense of community and the hands-on opportunities available within the music department.
“Everyone's super welcoming and kind,” Betzold said. “I feel like you hear that from whoever you run into, but the music department has been so incredible and I've had so many great opportunities, including the studio that I've been able to have here.”
At Auburn, Betzold became involved with the Don and Alexandra Clayton "Lucky Man" Studio, a brand new recording space that enhances student instruction while operating as a professional facility. She had the chance to perform at the studio's opening event, where she met musician Don Clayton. His passion for music and commitment to supporting student artists left a strong impression on her.
"I didn't expect to run into him that day, but he was so welcoming and genuinely excited about what we were doing at the studio,” Betzold said. “ You could tell how much he cared about giving students these opportunities."

Betzold’s journey as a vocalist began at an early age. In high school, she performed the national anthem at football games, which gradually led to large venues. One of her most memorable moments was singing the national anthem at an NBA game for the Charlotte Hornets. This opportunity not only strengthened her confidence as a performer but also opened doors to further professional engagements.
"I started singing national anthems in my high school football games, so singing in front of a much larger crowd was next level,” Betzold said. “It was definitely an amazing experience and opportunity that I will always remember.”
With growing performances and hands-on experience at Auburn, Betzold aspires to build a career in the music industry. Whether through performing, recording or working behind the scenes in the industry, she is determined to make a lasting impact. Her time at Auburn, along with her diverse experiences in the field, has given her the foundation to turn her passion into a profession.
"I want to create music that connects with people,” Betzold said. “Whether that’s through performing, recording or songwriting. I want my work to mean something to others."
