Application Procedure
To apply to the MPA program, you will need to submit the following materials:
- Online Application: Fill out the formal application online at the Auburn Graduate School website
- Transcripts: Submit/upload an official or unofficial copy of transcripts from ALL former colleges and universities in the online application portal. If admitted, you will be required to send two official copies from ALL former colleges and universities directly to:

- GRE Scores: The MPA program does not require GRE scores, although some programs at Auburn University do. Therefore, you will see a section for GRE scores on the online application. You may submit these scores if you have them, but they are not required.
- Recommendation Letters: Have a minimum of three letters of recommendation completed within the ApplyYourself web center by listing your references and their contact information. References can complete an online form and submit an additional letter in PDF in the online application system. The letters of recommendation should come from individuals who can speak to your ability to be successful in a graduate level program. DO NOT have the letters sent to the Graduate School.
- Writing Sample: A professional writing sample is required. This can be a copy of a paper completed for an undergraduate course or another document demonstrating your writing abilities and critical thinking skills. Please upload a writing sample as a PDF into the online application system. The writing sample should be no longer than 10 pages.
- Statement of Intent: The statement of intent is your opportunity to introduce yourself to the admissions committee. It is a very important component of your application package. The Statement of Intent should be no longer than three pages, double-spaced. Please ensure your Statement of Intent addresses the following questions:
- What are the most important things the Auburn University Master of Public Administration Admissions Committee should know about you (e.g., personal history and background, unique experiences and perspectives)? In other words, what led you to your interest in public administration and service?
- What are your professional and career goals? Ten years from now, what type of work do you hope to be doing in the field of public administration and service?
- How would a degree from the Auburn University Master of Public Administration Program (as opposed to any other public administration and service program) help you achieve your professional goals?
- Is there anything else the Auburn University Master of Public Administration Admissions Committee should know about you?
- In-Service Applicants: As evidence of your professional experience, please upload an updated copy of your CV/resume and the contact information (name, company, phone number, and email) for one to two references who can confirm your relevant work experience with your application.
General Application Deadlines: June 15 for Fall Semester and November 15 for Spring Semester
Priority Application Deadline: March 1 for the Fall Semester. The priority application deadline is for applicants who wish to be considered for graduate funding. Graduate funding is only awarded during the Fall admission cycle.
Graduate Assistantships
The MPA program offers a limited number of graduate assistantships each fall semester. These are awarded based on academic performance and financial need. Graduate assistantship consideration is given to applicants who meet the priority application deadlines listed above. Only complete applications will be considered for graduate assistantships.
To be considered for a graduate assistantship, please submit the following as one document with your application:
- A cover letter highlighting your skills
- A resume
- A statement of claim (need-based or merit-based). The statement of claim should clearly communicate if you would like funding consideration based on academic merit, financial need or both.
