Take a journey to another world with Auburn University Theatre’s production of "Eurydice"

Auburn University Theatre opens its 2019-20 season with “Eurydice” on Sept. 19, at 7:30 p.m. on Telfair Peet Theatre’s Mainstage. The show is directed by Dr. Tessa Carr.

Sarah Ruhl’s play “Eurydice” reimagines the classic Greek myth of Orpheus from the perspective of the heroine. With a contemporary sensibility, vibrant visuals, and plenty of twists and turns, “Eurydice” invites audiences on a harrowing, exhilarating journey. Join Eurydice as she travels to the underworld and labors to reconnect with her past, reclaim her love, and restore her memories.

“This poetic play meditates on love, memory, and loss. It lyrically examines familial love, romantic love, and our conceptions of self,” Carr said. “Sarah Ruhl’s language and imagery question who we are with and without our memories and loved ones.”

In 2003 “Eurydice” premiered at Madison Repertory Theatre, in Madison, Wisconsin. Ruhl’s “weird and wonderful new play” (New York Times) quickly gained popularity and opened Off-Broadway at Second Stage Theatre in 2007. The production received several award nominations, including the 2008 Drama League Award and Distinguished Production of a Play. “Hadestown,” a modern musical of the same tale, won the Tony Award for Best Musical this year.

The artistic team for “Eurydice” includes direction by Dr. Tessa Carr, scenic design by guest artist and Auburn alum, Sarah Mouyal, lighting and projection design by Fereshteh Rostampour, costume design by Tracy Oleinick, composer and sound design by guest artist and Auburn alum, Logan Pace, and assistant director, Falan Buie Madden. The cast includes: Tyler Carter, Hannah Fluker, Nyala Hall, Zac Moss, Bailey Murphy, Matt Stephenson, and Brantley Waller.
