Music and Theatre Students Bring Home Awards from Regional Competition
Auburn students in the music and theatre departments recently took home multiple awards at the 2018 Southeastern Regional National Association of Teachers of Singing (SER NATS) competition held this year at Auburn University.
The annual competition is sponsored by the Southeastern Region of the National Association of Teachers in Singing (NATS) and includes competitors in collegiate voice and theatre programs from Alabama, Florida, Georgia, and Puerto Rico.
Students of every voice teacher at Auburn participated, including students of Rosephayne Dunn Powell, Anne Duraski, Matthew Hoch, and Elizabeth Ann Benson. This was the first time that the theatre department sent students to participate in the competition. Benson, from the Department of Theatre, said “Faculty, staff, and students are excited to engage in joint activities between music and theatre programs, and to be able to support each other through this prestigious event. It was a wonderful weekend of celebrating our shared passion for the art of singing.”
Auburn University student finalists and prizewinners include Jarel Fryer, Patty Holley, Patrisha Matthews, Phillip McCown, Grace Moody, Eliott Player, Jessi Rogers, Jacob Verhine, and Ella Welch. As regional finalists, these students are eligible to compete at the national level of NATS student auditions this summer in Las Vegas.
