Design and Technology program in theatre ranked top 30 in nation

Image from Theatre website depicting actors on stageOnStage Blog recently included Auburn's Theatre Design and Technology program in its rankings of the top 30 colleges in the nation for theatre design and tech programs, 2019 - 2020.

Courses in the Design and Technology program offer a practical foundation in all areas of theatre production, including scenic, lighting, sound, costume and property design, technical direction, and construction. Design and tech students receive hands-on opportunities to explore interdisciplinary possibilities; experiment with, and apply new technical and conceptual knowledge; and learn both in the classroom and through production work. Students also enjoy opportunities to work with national and international guest artists, traveling nationally and internationally to attend workshops and exhibit work.

"This ranking is a well-deserved recognition of the tireless dedication of our faculty, staff, and students in the Department of Theatre," said College of Liberal Arts Dean Joseph Aistrup

OnStage Blog assigned a committee of just over 20 people to research the programs. They consisted of theatre educators, students, alumni, and parents, and based their criteria on a number of factors including Cost vs. Scholarships, Quality of Facilities, Performance/Production Opportunities, and Post-Graduate Support. They also asked questions about the diversity of students as well as the faculty.

This year, OnStage Blog also included a new category to factor into their rankings - on/off-campus safety. According to their website, OnStage Blog "felt that {safety} is a factor that is often not made a priority. So in addition to cold-calling the schools, we also took a look at their Clery Reports and asked questions about how proactive these schools are when it comes to safety."

Auburn’s degree in Design and Technology provides a foundation for a career, not only in theatre, but in related fields such as film, television, and concert tours.
