The Auburn Ninety-Nines, an all-female pilot organization at Auburn University, expanded its community impact this spring by reimagining its annual “Pilot for a Day” event. Traditionally hosted for select youth groups, this year’s program was opened to the public, welcoming families from across the Auburn-Opelika area to the Delta Air Lines Aviation Education Building on April 19.

The event drew more than 500 attendees and nearly 100 students and faculty volunteers supported the event, underscoring both the strong demand for hands-on STEM experiences and the organization’s commitment to community engagement and outreach.

Designed to inspire the next generation of aviators, “Pilot for a Day” offered a range of immersive, aviation-themed activities. Children had the opportunity to fly Cessna 172 simulators alongside Auburn Certified Flight Instructors, explore aircraft displays and participate in interactive crafts. Attendees also experienced a high-fidelity Airbus A320 flight simulator, similar to those used by major airlines for pilot training. Volunteers from the Ninety-Nines guided families through each activity station, providing hands-on support and answering questions throughout the day. The event also featured industry professionals, including F-35 pilots from the Montgomery Air National Guard and representatives from the Air Line Pilots Association, offering attendees a broader perspective on aviation careers.

In partnership with Aspire Aviation, the Ninety-Nines hosted a raffle to support future programming and awarded three discovery flights, giving participants a firsthand introduction to flying.

“The event was a huge success. We received some amazing feedback from families about the organization, activities and execution of the event,” said Jalyn Breedlove, a senior in Professional Flight and president of the Ninety-Nines. “We hope this becomes a yearly tradition and are able to impact even more kids next year.”
