Department of Music performs in Europe, tours Steinway in NYC

Symphonic Winds Ensemble
The Symphonic Winds in Ronda, Spain

Faculty and students in the Department of Music spent the end of spring semester sharing the sounds of Auburn with thousands of music enthusiasts across the Atlantic.

The Auburn Symphonic Winds ensemble traveled to Spain from May 9-18 for a nine-day tour of the southern region. In addition to performing for, and alongside, some of the best community bands in Spain, they experienced some of the region’s most important cultural activities like medieval monuments and flamenco shows. The Symphonic Winds performed in Chauchina, Ronda, Granada and Chinchón.

Students from the Auburn University Choirs performed in London during a trip from May 26-June 2. The group rehearsed in the state-of-the-art VOCES8 Centre in preparation for its performance at Cadogan Hall on May 30. The trip was hosted by Vox Anima London and billed as “I Dream a World: A Celebration of Music by Black American Composers.” Professor Rosephanye Powell served as composer-in-residence with Professor William Powell serving as conductor along with Brandon Boyd from the University of Missouri.

In addition to traveling abroad, 11 members of the Auburn University Piano Studio traveled to New York City on May 22-25 for a tour of the Steinway factory and to select the Department of Music’s newest piano. After touring the Steinway factory, the students tried out five brand new Model B pianos and ultimately chose Model B #623331 for the department. The trip also included several cultural events such as attending an opera at the Metropolitan Opera House at Lincoln Center, exploring the Metropolitan Museum of Art and MOMA, and visiting Carnegie Hall and the Juilliard School. Students participating in the trip were Madden Bain, Julia Herrin, Chandler Ogles, Jack Stephens, Rhianna Lumpkin, Enoch Yang, Abby Harrison, Mary Blake Fletcher, Abbie Barton, Daniel Burque and Bradley Conrad. The trip was led by Professor and Steinway Artist Jeremy Samolesky.
