About Me
Emery Harvison has been Assistant Principal Trumpet of the Phoenix Symphony since 1996. He was acclaimed during the 2003-2004 season while serving as the Symphony’s acting principal trumpet. The Arizona Republic’s review of trumpeter Sergie Nakariakov’s guest performance with the PSO read, “The evening’s centerpiece was Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition. Continuing the evening’s theme of virtuoso trumpet playing was Emery Harvison’s lucid string of demanding solos.”
Harvison’s solo appearances include the Phoenix Symphony, Prescott Pops Orchestra, Prescott Chamber Orchestra, Arizona State University Orchestra, Arizona State University Symphonic Band, Mesa Community College Symphonic Band, and the Arizona Bach Festival. His solo appearances with the Phoenix Symphony include performances of Vivaldi’s Concerto in C Major for Two Trumpets and Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto No. 2. Emery was also the first prize winner of the 1994 Rafael Mendez Brass Institute-United Musical Instruments International Solo Competition.
Harvison completed his undergraduate work at Louisiana State University, where he received Bachelor of Music degrees in music and music education. After LSU, he completed his Master of Music degree at Arizona State University, while serving as a graduate teaching assistant for Arizona State University Regents Professor David Hickman. He has recorded with Hickman for Summit Records and has published articles in the International Trumpet Guild and International Trombone Journals.
Harvison has served on the faculties of Arizona State University and Mesa Community College. In 2016, he was an audition finalist for the LA Philharmonic. In 2020, he was awarded the ASU School of Music Outstanding Private Teaching Award. His private studio has been extremely successful, with his students consistently winning positions in AZ Regional and All State bands and orchestras. His students have marched DCI in the Academy, Blue Devils, Carolina Crown and Vanguard. Students have also received music scholarships to ASU, NAU, the U of A, and Indiana University.
Harvison is listed in the book Trumpet Greats, which is “a biographical dictionary of famous trumpeters since the Baroque Era” by noted educator/author/trumpeter David Hickman. He has studied with James West, David Hickman, Allan Dean and Sam Pilafian.
Harvison has been a Performing Artist for Conn-Selmer and is currently an S.E. Shires Trumpet Artist.
