About Me
Erin Fitzgerald is a PhD candidate at Auburn University. Her dissertation, Rhetoric, Regulation, and the FDA: Constructing Health Identities in the HIV Drug Approval Process, examines how texts from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Centers of Disease Control and Infection (CDC), and pharmaceutical companies mediate the drug approval process in ways that shape the construction of health identities. Her research focuses on the intersections of identity, gender, and ethics of care in health and medicine contexts. She is particularly curious about normalizing narratives that are taken up in medical decision-making and medical policy practices.
She has presented at the Rhetoric of Health and Medicine Symposium, Conference on College Composition and Communication, and Feminisms and Rhetorics Conference. She was an editorial assistant for Written Communication—a peer-reviewed international research quarterly journal, and she was a reviewer for two peer-reviewed journals: Rhetoric of Health and Medicine and Technical Communication Quarterly. Her work has appeared in Kairos: Journal of Rhetoric, Pedagogy, and Technology and Written Communication, and she has a book chapter titled “Gendered Responsibility: A Critique of HPV Vaccine Ads, 2006-2016” published in the edited collection Women’s Health Advocacy: Rhetorical Ingenuity for the 21st Century.
