Mary Riley earned her BS degree at the United States Military Academy in West Point, New York and MA at the University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana. Upon graduation from the United States Military Academy, she attended the Army Aviation Flight School at Fort Rucker, Alabama. She earned her basic, combat, and instrument ratings in Army rotary wing aircraft. Later in her Army career, she attended the Captain’s Career Course and Army’s Command and Staff General College, and she taught foreign language at the United States Military Academy. As a career Army aviation officer, she held command and staff positions in operations, training, strategic planning, safety, logistics, future aviation operations development, and academic development in both multi-service and international aviation combat and training environments. As a PhD student at Auburn University, Riley’s dissertation research involves determining student self-determination in a gamified virtual reality learning environment. She is involved in the FAA Center of Excellence for Technical Training and Human Performance funded research grants including the development of the Aviation Gamification Education System (AGES) with other Auburn University researchers and technicians. She is active in multiple Auburn University interdisciplinary organizations to include the Biggio Center for the Enhancement of Teaching and Learning’s virtual, augmented, and mixed reality working group, the Veterans’ Resource Center, and Women in Sciences and Engineering Institute.
