Since April 2025, I am chairing the Climate-Resilient Infrastructure Systems (CRIS) group at the Civil Engineering & Management Department at the University of Twente, Enschede, the Netherlands. The CRIS group is committed to improving the sustainability and resilience of infrastructure systems. Inspired by systems thinking, we perceive infrastructure as complex systems where values such as safety are increasingly provided by solutions that combine traditional structures with nature-based, community-led and/or digital solutions. Our research, education and knowledge valorization activities are all linked to enhancing the sustainability and resilience of our infrastructure systems. I am personally especially working on stakeholder participation, cross-sectoral collaboration, system innovation, learning and transformation processes, boundary judgements, public values, transdisciplinary research approaches, participatory resilience assessment and decision-making processes. Our research is funded by a variety of regional, national and European funders, and we closely collaborate with Dutch government organizations (municipalities, regional water authorities, provinces, Ministry), Dutch knowledge and network organizations (Deltares, 4TU Centre for Resilience Engineering) and a wide range of European and international partners.
Before joining the University of Twente I was a postdoc researcher at the Institute of Environmental Systems Research, University of Osnabrück. I worked as project manager for international projects at the Dutch Regional Water Authority Vechtstromen (2013).
My Ph.D. research at the University of Twente (Sept. 2008 - May 2013) focused on the effectiveness of Dutch-funded water projects in Romania.
