I am a historian and philosopher of science whose research focuses on the origins of modern science in the Scientific Revolution of the early modern period. My work aims to defend the authority of science on rational yet historicized grounds. I am interested in the structure and progress of scientific knowledge, especially in physics and astronomy, and in the development of the intellectual norms that bound scientific thought. Among other publications, I authored Representing Space in the Scientific Revolution and co-edited The Cambridge History of Philosophy of the Scientific Revolution.
