Dr. Dana L. Pertermann recently joined Auburn University from New Mexico Highlands University, where she served as NAGPRA manager and archaeology faculty. In that role, she upgraded the university’s facilities and standards of care for ancestral remains and regional cultural collections. She previously worked in Oregon, Texas and Wyoming and brings more than 10 years of experience in NAGPRA consultation and repatriation, along with nearly 20 years of teaching experience.
Pertermann earned a bachelor’s degree in geology from the University of Minnesota, a master’s degree in historical archaeology from Illinois State University and a doctorate in anthropology from Texas A&M University. Combined with eight years of military service, her academic and professional background has equipped her with extensive expertise in collections management, communication and community engagement in service to Auburn and Indigenous communities.
She is widely published, with numerous peer-reviewed articles in historical archaeology and conflict theory, and is the author of two books, The Archaeology of Engagement and Echoes of the Past (in press). Pertermann is passionate about serving as a voice for the past and an advocate for the future. She recently relocated to Auburn with her young family and her dog, Merle Haggard.
