About Me

Adrienne Wilson is a dancer and musician who has been actively pursuing a life in the arts for many years. As a professor of theatre at Auburn University, she teaches dance courses based in modern/contemporary technique, rhythm tap, and movement analysis by conceptually blending in elements of dance history, composition, improvisation, anatomy and kinesiology. She also choreographs and directs the annual student dance concert, coaches movement for actors, choreographs for theatre productions, and teaches music theory fundamentals and piano skills for the music theatre performance major. Wilson created the dance minor, and advises and mentors students involved in dance.

Wilson earned an MFA in choreography and performance from SUNY Brockport, studied music and movement at Boston University, and earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in piano performance from Ithaca College. She is also a certified teacher in The Bill Evans Method of Laban/Bartenieff Based Modern Dance Technique. She was awarded the 2008-2009 College of Liberal Arts Instructional Excellence Award.

Her choreographic works have been presented in Alabama, Florida, Tennessee, Mississippi, Arkansas, New York, Pennsylvania, Georgia, Utah, South Carolina and California. Performance credits include works by Bill Evans, Sean Curran, José Limón, Wallie Wolfgruber, Santo Giglio, and Josh Hilberman, as well as her own choreography. She has studied modern dance with Bill Evans, Santo Giglio, Wallie Wolfgruber, Vicky Uris, and Jenny Coogan, while taking special opportunities to work with the José Limón Dance Company and Sean Curran. Most recently she has performed in “Electric Shorts” and “Gamely Mannered” choreographed by Claire Porter. Her work in rhythm tap is strongly influenced by Bill Evans, Brenda Bufalino, Josh Hilberman, Drika Overton, Katherine Kramer, and Sarah Petronio.

Wilson has taught on the dance faculties of SUNY Brockport, Hobart and William Smith Colleges, and Alfred University; and also served on the music faculty at Elmira College and as staff accompanist at Ithaca College. She has taught classes in modern dance and rhythm tap at the American College Dance Association for the last several years at University of Mississippi, University of Florida, Middle Tennessee State University and others. Most recently she presented a panel discussion on dance curriculum and co-presented a creativity workshop with Bill Evans, Anita Feldman and Barry Blumenfeld at the University of Buffalo based on the fusion of modern/contemporary dance with rhythm tap. She has been active as a guest artist, choreographer, and teacher for Sewanee, University of the South, Southern Utah University, and The College of Charleston.

Wilson serves on the board of directors for the American College Dance Association and the Alabama Dance Council. She is a member of the National Dance Educators Organization and EastWest Somatics, and a former member of the American Dance Asylum, a post-modern dance company specializing in site-specific work.

In addition to her work in dance and theatre, Wilson works professionally as a musician and serves as a collaborative pianist for the Department of Music at Auburn University. She is also an affiliate of Auburn University's Women's and Gender Studies Program.
