Brian Delaney is an assistant professor of journalism in the School of Communication and Journalism. He was an award-winning sports reporter, sports editor, and broadcaster during a career that spanned 15 years across newspaper, radio, and digital journalism outlets. He spent the bulk of his industry work at The Daily Local News in West Chester, Pa., The Ithaca Journal in Ithaca, NY., and ESPN Radio 1160 in Lansing, NY, in addition to producing various freelance assignments.
His research explores the interplay of the learning sciences, particularly cognitive science, with journalism education and fieldwork. His dissertation work utilized the Cognitive Apprenticeship Model to frame a Delphi study in which a panel of 24 expert online journalism educators created a framework of pedagogical practices and instructional design strategies for teaching experiential tasks in online learning environments. This framework, called The EXCEL Online Framework (Expertise in Communication through Experiential Learning Online), features 36 primary and 59 ancillary practices for developing rigorous experiential tasks in online settings.
Delaney co-founded the Education, Research, and Brain Sciences (E-LaBS) Research Collaborative at the Drexel University School of Education. E-LaBS unites interdisciplinary faculty, researchers, administrators, and students who are committed to teaching and learning through innovative pedagogical and andragogical approaches that support lifelong and lifewide learning across dynamic educational and training environments. From 2018-2021, he served as founding Co-Editor of the Emerging Voices in Education (EViE) academic journal, which was the first education journal directed by graduate students and early scholars for the publication of scholarship produced by graduate students and early scholars. From 2012-2017, Delaney taught Introduction to Journalism, News Reporting & Writing I, and Journalism Research at the Ithaca College Roy H. Park School of Communications.
