Alfred Uhry’s 1996 play, originally commissioned as part of the Olympic Arts Festival for the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta, tells the often humorous story of a family, a community, and a world on the cusp of great change. It’s December 1939. Hitler has recently invaded Poland. Gone with the Wind is about to open at Loew’s Theatre. The entire Freitag family eagerly awaits the annual Ballyhoo, a lavish cotillion ball held at the local, exclusive country club. Won’t you join in the festivities?
