Traditional Artist-in-Residence

The Alabama Folklife Association and Caroline Marshall Draughon Center for the Arts & Humanities are proud to lead the new Traditional Artist-in-Residence program to spotlight, support, and share the work of talented traditional artists in Alabama. Artists spend one week in residence at Auburn University, teaching their craft at free workshops in Auburn and local surrounding communities.

 

Orran Scruggs

 

Orran Scruggs is an Alabama-based artist, woodcarver, and designer. After more than 25 years working as a graphic designer, illustrator, and painter, Scruggs discovered a new artistic path through hand-carving wooden spoons and utensils. This passion led to the creation of The MaeLou Collection, a line of functional wooden wares that reflects his appreciation for traditional craft, natural materials, and intentional design. In addition to his studio practice, Scruggs serves as Deputy Director of Aunt Katie’s Community Garden in Dothan, Alabama, where he combines art, education, and community engagement.
