Magazine Launch

Stories from Collinsville, Elba, Linden and Selma are featured in the first issue of Living Democracy, a magazine that captures the spirit of these diverse Alabama communities.

During their ten weeks of living and working in partner communities, Auburn University Living Democracy students discover active citizens and local treasures as they write about their civic experiences.

The Living Democracy magazine features the best of their work. The publication includes stories on community organizations making a difference in each town. Profiles of community partners and overviews of summer projects coordinated by students are highlighted.

To officially launch the magazine, Living Democracy veterans Blake Evans, Cristiana Shipma and Lowery McNeal presented a copy to Jim Byard, director of the Alabama Department of Economic and Community Development, in Montgomery. Copies will also be distributed in partner communities.

Also included in the inaugural issue of Living Democracy are stories about community forums hosted by Living Democracy students and the David Mathews Center for Civic Life staff.

A photo by 2013 Living Democracy student Laney Payne graces the cover of the magazine. Anna Beth Jager, a student in the AU College of Communication and Journalism, designed the publication.

Living Democracy students serve as Jean O’Connor Synder interns with the David Mathews Center for Civic Life, a program jointly administered by the University of Alabama’s New College. Dr. Mark Wilson, director of Civic Learning Initiatives in the College of Liberal Arts, and Nan Fairley, associate professor of journalism, coordinate the project.

Seventeen students have participated in Living Democracy, a College of Liberal Arts initiative, since 2012.
