FAA Letter of Authorization for Auburn University – ATP Certification with Reduced Aeronautical Experience
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has issued Auburn University a Letter of Authorization (LOA) under 14 CFR Part 61 permitting the university to certify eligible graduates for an Airline Transport Pilot (ATP) certificate with reduced aeronautical experience. This authorization is effective December 4, 2023, and identified as Amendment 6, Part 61 ID No. AUBQFS80.
Purpose of the Authorization
This LOA enables Auburn University to confirm that its qualified graduates have met the academic requirements of § 61.160 (b), (c), or (d) for an ATP certificate requiring fewer flight hours.
University Responsibilities
- Issue certifying statements confirming completion of all required aviation coursework.
- Ensure the correct § 61.160 pathway is cited.
- Place certification statements on FAA-acceptable supplemental documents.
Eligibility Requirements
Auburn must verify each graduate:
- Holds an eligible aviation degree.
- Completes required coursework from the FAA‑approved list.
- Completes required instrument and commercial ground and flight training from the authorized Part 141 pilot school.
Transfer Credits
Transfer credit may be applied only if:
- The other institution is also FAA‑authorized for reduced‑hours ATP.
- Courses appear in that institution’s FAA‑approved list.
- Credit hours do not exceed those at the originating institution.
Program Structure
Auburn’s authorization includes FAA‑approved aviation courses across private, instrument, commercial, multi‑engine, flight instruction, aviation safety, airport management, weather, human factors, and other professional aviation topics.
Accreditation Requirement
Auburn must maintain accreditation through the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS).
FAA Oversight
The FAA may amend, suspend, or rescind this authorization if regulations change or if Auburn fails to meet required standards.
