Solo exhibition featuring works by Lori Larusso.
May 1 – August 23, 2023
In feral / domestic, an early bird gets the gummy worm, a bear dangles from a birdhouse and vultures dine on a cat-shaped cake. Lori Larusso's paintings explore humans’ paradoxical relationships with both foods and animals, in or near the home. In exploring these topics, Larusso's paintings and installations engage with humor and playfulness—both a kind of coping strategy when navigating the perplexities of contemporary life. Food culture is a recurring theme in Larusso's work. Over time, she has broadened her thematic scope, beyond the complexities and conundrums that take place in kitchens and other interior domestic spaces, to include narratives that take place outside, in the backyard, on the sidewalk, at the park. Larusso says, "I can’t help but wonder about the contradictions of being human: our needs for belonging, and our attachment to comparisons; our fondness for nature, and our almost pathological need to control it, in its most elemental sense."
