Meet the Lab

Dr. Shapiro received his B.S. in Psychology from the University of Rhode Island and his Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from the University of Miami. He completed an internship in clinical child/pediatric psychology at Duke University Medical Center. His professional interests focus on the description and assessment of ADHD and executive dysfunction, social-emotional problems, and learning disabilities.  Dr. Shapiro served as Director of Clinical Training from 2005 to 2014, and two years as Interim DCT in the 1990s. His graduate teaching activities focus on instruction of clinical assessment and supervision of cases seen through the department’s training clinic. He also conducts clinical/educational evaluations at a local private practice. In his spare time, he enjoys listening to jazz and classic rock, collecting unique salt and pepper shakers, and watching shows on Netflix and other media platforms.

Graduate Students

  • Maggie Young graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and Spanish from the University of Dayton in May 2016. She is broadly interested in neurocognitive functioning as it relates to non-adherence and other psycho-social variables following pediatric solid organ transplant. In her spare time, Maggie enjoys playing and watching sports as well as spending time with her friends and family. 

  • Melissa Miller graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology and Sociology-Criminology from Ohio University in May 2014. Her current research is focused on responses to interpersonal stress in college students experiencing SCT symptoms. In her spare time, Melissa enjoys traveling, reading, and spending time with friends.

  • Courtney Hess graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology and Criminology from Pennsylvania State University in May 2015. She received her M.A. in Clinical Practices from the University of Hartford in 2017. Her research interests broadly include childhood anxiety and depression, specifically what factors affect children and adolescents’ peer relationships and development of anxiety and depressive related symptoms.   In her spare time, Courtney enjoys watching college football, spending time on the lake, and spending time with friends and family.
