Why volunteer your time in psychology?

Volunteering is a great way to give back to your community. It can also provide you with an opportunity to gain practical experience, evaluate the suitability of a particular career, and build your resume.

Below is a list of organizations and agencies that seek volunteers to assist in the delivery of their services. We have provided a link to the homepage or contact information for each organization as well as a brief note about each organization (typically taken from the organization's "about us" page).

Crisis Centers

Domestic Violence Intervention Center

The overall mission of DVIC is to eliminate violence in the lives of men, women and children in our five-county area. We are dedicated to providing direct services to domestic violence survivors so that they will gain the self-confidence to achieve self-sufficiency which makes them less likely to return to their abuser.

Crisis Center of East Alabama

Crisis Center of East Alabama provides suicide and crisis intervention. We have a telephone hotline where we talk with callers about problems, and we try to find appropriate solutions for those problems.

Rape Counselors of East Alabama

Rape Counselors of East Alabama strives to provide 24-hour free and confidential services to victims of sexual assault, their families, and friends. RCEA is committed to empowering survivors and eliminating all forms of sexual violence in our community. Through education and awareness, RCEA aims to change the cultural norms that enable sexual assault to proliferate. Our service area includes: Lee, Tallapoosa, Macon, Chambers and Russell county with our office located in Auburn, AL. We welcome survivors of all genders, races, religions, incomes, languages, abilities, ethnicities, and sexual orientations.

Safe Harbor

Safe Harbor creates a community where people are empowered to discover healing and recovery for their family in the midst of teen and young adult rebellion.

Sav-A-Life Ministry

Trained staff and volunteers educate both women and men about the alternatives to abortion, risks and long-term effects of abortion, emergency contraceptives, and sexually transmitted infections. With this knowledge, clients are empowered to make informed decisions and bring needed restoration to their lives.

Alabama Counsel on Human Relations -- Head Start

The Alabama Council on Human Relations, Inc. is a private non-profit organization, funded exclusively for, educational and eleemosynary (charitable) purposes that partners with persons and agencies in the community, on behalf of the low-income population. The goal of ACHR is to serve those persons with low incomes and the promotion and implementation of programs that improve economic conditions, education and racial relationships for all people, resulting in increased self-sufficiency and overall improvement in their quality of life.

Alabama Youth relationship Education Project (AYRE)

The Alabama Youth Relationship Education project (AYRE) offers hands-on experiences with youth in 9^th- 12^th grade by applying skills, theories, and knowledge you are already learning in your major courses! Interested students will have the chance to earn a FREE training in evidence-based Relationship Education curricula and have the amazing opportunity to implement the curriculum to youth in local high school! HDFS 3930 and HDFS 4980 are graded courses in which students, from ANY major, have the opportunity to enroll for 2-3 credit hours based on their availability. All time commitments will be based around students’ schedules! Students will develop relationship skills, facilitation skills, and professional skills throughout their time in the course. Interested? Auburn University - Project Uplift

Project Uplift volunteers work as mentors and role models for underprivileged children around the Lee County area. Each volunteer is assigned a child with whom he or she is responsible to spend time.

Boys and Girls Club of Greater Lee County

With the Boys and Girls Clubs of East Alabama, our vision is simple. We seek to provide a world-class Club Experience that assures success is within reach of every young person who enters our doors with all members on track to graduate from high school with a plan for the future, demonstrating good character and citizenship, and living a healthy lifestyle.

Learning Tree

The Learning Tree is a preschool program designed for children with autism and their peer mentors. Volunteers may sign up to work for course credit or simply for volunteer experience.

Lee County Youth Development Center

The Lee County Youth Development Center is uniquely set apart - singular in its design of offering a broad continuum of services and care for youth and families. Our agency strives to maintain the highest standards of quality care and innovative practices with expertise in the areas of prevention, intervention and residential care.

Twin Cedars Youth and Family Services

Twin Cedars Youth and Family Services, Inc. provides residential and community-based services in LaGrange, Macon, and Columbus, and East Alabama. Connecting with our communities, Twin Cedars provides a wide range of programs, in order to meet individual community need. Our programs are very diverse, from prevention to advocacy, to maximum oversight residential programs.

Community Service Organizations

The Curtis House

The Curtis House is a 501(c)(3) non-profit community service facility lead by the Curtis family, creating a safe haven for the elderly, adults, and children. The presence of The Curtis House restores the legacy of the Curtis family's dedication to raise awareness of healthy and holistic ways of living. With the necessary resources, the Jeter community will strive toward a recognizable, productive, and sustainable asset adding to the growth of the City of Opelika.

Lee County Literacy Coalition

The Lee County Literacy Coalition (LCLC) is a non-profit agency dedicated to providing literacy programs at no cost to the community. The LCLC offers tutoring for reading, writing, math, computer, and GED preparation to individuals in the Lee County area.

NBB Mentorship

NBB Mentoring is a Community Service Give Back Organization that strengthens and empowers communities by providing individuals and families with the resources and tools necessary for productive change. NBB provides mentoring programs for children 5 to 17 years age and engages in community efforts to aid homeless Veterans and Senior Citizens in Macon and Lee county Alabama.

Mental Health Service Organizations

Auburn University - EAGLES program

The Education to Accomplish Growth in Life Experiences for Success, or EAGLES, is a comprehensive transition program (CTP) for students with intellectual disabilities. The program provides a post-secondary education opportunity for students with intellectual disabilities to engage in a two or four-year campus experience to help students achieve their employment and independent living goals upon successful completion of the program. BraveHeart Center for Place and Purpose (BCPP)

BraveHeart Center for Place and Purpose provides an opportunity for Auburn students to enhance the quality of life for young adults with disabilities through daily health and wellness activities, and support community inclusion efforts on Auburn’s campus and throughout East Alabama. Camp ASCCA

Camp ASCCA volunteers work under experienced staff in assisting campers with disabilities such as cerebral palsy, spina bifida, and developmental delay in various areas of the camping experience.
