"Surely You'll Begin the World: Black Studies Epistemology on the Other Side of Time"
As a sustained engagement with Black thought and Black ways of knowing emerging primarily from the formulation of the Black Atlantic, Black Studies at the very least asks us to reconcile hegemonic and indigenous ways of knowing, and perhaps first and at our very best, to jettison the former and center the latter, with stops, as the Amtrak announcer says, in between. This talk considers the field’s offerings for reclaiming suppressed theoretical and epistemic impulses through a meditation on the afterlives of three dead fathers—my father, my daughter’s father, and my mother’s father—and their power as three fantastic portals to the other side of time.
Free and open to all. For more information, contact Dr. Ernest L. Gibson III at elg0036@auburn.edu.
