Art, music, and dance classes are held on Monday nights each semester at the Opelika Sportsplex from 5:30 to 7:00 pm. There is NO cost to participating families. For more information, contact Angie Burque at burquad@auburn.edu or John Huling at jhuling@opelika-al.gov.
Program Schedule
4:45 pm — Volunteers arrive
5:30 — Club members arrive. The club member meets up with their BraveHeart coaches (2 per teen) and says goodbye to their family member. The club member signs in and chooses which classes he or she would like to attend. Then the friends engage in community time. Community time includes reading books, doing puzzles, arts and crafts, general fun, before moving to class sessions.
5:45 — Club members prepare to go to class sessions and begin moving to the rooms.
5:50–6:15 — Class session 1. The groups participate in one of three fine arts activities: music (which consist of African drumming), dance, and art.
6:15–6:20 — Classes transition to the next class.
6:20–6:45 — Class session 2. The groups participate in one of three fine arts activities.
6:45–7:00 — Groups return to the community room to prepare for departure. Family members meet their club member and talk to the volunteers to get a report on how the night went.
