Tal Peretz
Dr. Tal Peretz has engaged in and studied men’s anti-sexist and anti-violence activism for over a decade, and been involved in social justice education for longer. His Ph.D. is in Sociology and Gender studies, from the University of Southern California. He is the author of "Some Men: Male Allies and the Movement to End Violence Against Women" (Oxford University Press, www.somemen.org), co-written with Michael Messner and Max Greenberg and winner of the Pacific Sociological Associations Distinguished Scholarship Award.
His scholarship on men, masculinities, and feminism has been published in academic journals, edited volumes, and popular and activist/professional newsletters. The latest research looks at how intersecting race, class, religious, and sexual identities shape the efforts of two grassroots men's gender justice groups. Considering himself a public sociologist, he regularly appears in media and interviews, writes for non-academic audiences, and brings his research and experience to support people working for social justice. His commentary has appeared in the Huffington Post, VoiceMale magazine, LiveScience.com, PrimeMind.com, Saloona, The Link, Regarding Research Podcast, the Opelika-Auburn News.
Currently a professor of Sociology and Women’s Studies at Auburn University, he teaches classes that focus on intersectional inequality, sex/gender, sexuality, race/ethnicity, social movements and social change. His teaching style involves helping students connect course concepts to their own lives, and getting them out into the world to learn by doing; this has won him multiple teaching awards, including the Mortar Board National College Senior Honor Society’s Excellence in Teaching Award. When not writing, researching, or teaching, Dr. Peretz enjoys teaching yoga and playing music.
