For Parents

BraveHearts aims to provide parents and families an opportunity for respite with the knowledge that your family member is in a safe, non-judgmental setting. We also provide parents and families with opportunities to share in your teen’s joy and excitement, and provide opportunities to be “in the audience” for performances and art exhibits.

He looked forward to each session with excitement, something he rarely expresses outwardly.

We enjoyed every minute. My son talked about his experience often afterwards. He was able to describe what he did to friends and family.  His self confidence was improved. It was a safe place to go. We are sad that it had to end for now.

Social interaction with one-on-one assistance because my child doesn’t know how to communicate to a friend. He needs practice and you provided that.

Their enjoyment and glee at having a fun shared activity with others, a rare opportunity to spend social time with friends outside of school and camp

Being able to socialize with people who “understood him

Watching my child come out of his shell, grin & participate, make eye contact & have fun

To Volunteer

BraveHearts helps student volunteers increase their

  1. comfort level around people with disabilities
  2. willingness to engage in communication with people with disabilities
  3. understanding of specific disabilities
  4. desire to be an advocate for improved policies, programs, and services for people with disabilities

I have never learned so much while I loved what I am doing, and I gained so much from personal interaction with these kids.

This experience is probably the best thing I will take with me when I graduate from Auburn- seeing how a few hardworking people can make such a difference.

It provided me the opportunity to see the person as an individual and not just a person with a disability. That is a wonderful gift I will take with me throughout life.
