Summerfield's essay part of gift to mayor in Italy
The mayor of Catania, Italy, was recently presented with a book containing anti-mafia essays and articles in relation to Remembrance Day (Giorno della memoria) on May 23, this year marking the 25th anniversary of the Capaci massacre, in which antimafia judge Giovanni Falcone was killed, together with his wife and bodyguards. "The Italian Antimafia, New Media and the Culture of Legality," was presented to Mayor Enzo Bianco by local dignitaries. Within the book, published by University of Toronto Press, is a chapter written by Dr. Giovanna Summerfield, Associate Dean for Educational Affairs in the College of Liberal Arts at Auburn University. Summerfield worked with the local youth of Catania to highlight their initiatives in the essay, “Per non dimenticare: Antimafia Digital Storytelling and Reflections.”
“As a native of Catania, I was honored to work with the brave and visionary students whose digital project was carried out to stimulate reflections about the values of legality and active citizenship, and about the fight against the mafia. I was doubly honored (and surprised) to hear that, on this important day, that essay was part of a gift bestowed upon the highest official of my hometown; a small token of my duty as a citizen, even if from miles away,” Summerfield said.
Summerfield has published, presented, and taught extensively on Sicily and the Mediterranean, antimafia initiatives, women’s studies, religious movements and literature in the long eighteenth-century in France and Italy. In 2005, she created the Taormina, Italy, Study Abroad Program, providing an interdisciplinary curriculum and community engagement opportunities to all students enrolled, adding, in 2011, an exchange program with the University of Catania. She teaches Italian and French in the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures, and is also a published poet and short-story author.
